During our lessons we have been asked to look at concepts. I have studied Marcel Duchamp in one of my previous modules and I think he fits perfectly within this criteria. Duchamp opened the door to conceptual art by using already made items in his art and then selling of these creations as art. I think these ideas are particular to the Dada movement.
Marcel Duchamp – Fountain (1917)
Personally, I think his most influential piece is “Fountain”, this piece was bought by the Tate Gallery for an estimated £621,000.000.
I think in the present, art has been influenced heavily by the Dada and the Fluxus movement, I think this is best done when artists make personal usage of new media to give birth to new ideas. This in turn makes me believe that there are no more boundaries, therefore “all art is experimental”.
The artist is free to express their thoughts, concepts and emotions through whatever means possible (within reason). A concept can relate to a personal or emotional state (following the path of Freud or alike).it can be associated to the history of at itself, politics or even anti art statements.
For my part, I always try to think visually and try not to force myself to think up of concepts because these are the ones that I always find hardest to develop. I prefer to experience it first in a dream, have the concept float in to my head when I’m talking about something completely different or simply from listening to a piece of music.
