Fluxus

Fluxus, I think is best described as the act of blending of different artistic media and disciplines which all took place in the 60’s. I have encountered the term ‘intermedia’ in some places which is what has been used to describe this movement. After some hunting around I found that it was first used by the artist Dick Higgins in one of his famous essays in 1966, ’Something Else’.

A Spanish Dada/Fluxus pamphlet from 1960

The movement was famous for displaying their critical attitude towards new technology and moved on to find alternative solutions to existing communal and artistic situations. Their inspiration came from partly the Dadaist movement and partly the Bauhaus movement.

After more digging around on this subject I came across forms of media which made me question the Fluxus movement, and I’ll tell you why. I discovered many art pieces in the form of videos all over the internet. Now, as I said in the above paragraph, artists within this movement were very ‘anti-technology’, therefore why would they create numerous contradicting pieces of art only viewable via the tv medium when they were clearly working towards making that technology obsolete?
