Week Three

We were shown footage of a piece of work from Documenta 12. Many were installations and were heavy on physical computing applications.

I did some research of my own and found some information and videos on Imogen Stidworthy. Imogen (born 1963) had created a short video which investigates the language phenomena. The most common words spoken were obviously “I hate”, the camera angles were all also closed. The video consisted of no establishing shots nor did the camera dolly at all. The video only consisted of very close up shots, especially focusing on the eyes and mouth. You would view the different expressions of the eyes and the lips as the words were spoken by and to the main character – in a sense it felt like he was being brain washed. There were also numerous phonetic projections of the words being spoken. I think this was a fresh angle and very imaginative, but the issues like so many of the dead artists in Documenta feel like they are from artists of a former age.
